About the archive

CostaRicaPhotos.com went online in 2002 as a family project: keep traveling around the country, photograph its life, its people, its natural wonders and its towns, and share it all. Costa Rica has such a variety of places that the job was always a work in progress.

Over the years the collection grew trip by trip, with pictures from friends and family added along the way. It covers beaches and volcanoes, but also the things travel guides skip: small-town churches, roadside food, election days, old banknotes, bus stations and farmhouses.

Many of the pictures were taken with the small digital cameras of their time, so they are modest in size. We publish them as they were taken, because they record the country as it looked then.

Everything here is free to use with a link back. See the terms.
