The sarapiqui river crosses this whole agricultural and tourist area. The main town is called Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui which is on the shores of the Sarapiqui river. Another important town is La Virgen where the famous biological reserve "La Selva" is located.
Cattle ranches, forestry farms, pineapple and cocoa plantations are some of the traditional agricultural activities going on in the region. Tourism is also thriving in the are mainly with river rafting trips down the Sarapiqui river. There are many restaurants, hotels, and other small resorts that make it a very interesting area for the visitor.
