The people of Guacaste decided to annex their territory to Costa Rica. Ever since then a festivity is held every year to commemorate that day. Liberia is the capital of the province of Guanacaste. This territory belonged to Nicaragua in the early 19th century, but the people of Guanacaste, in that time called the 'Partido de Nicoya', decided to annex their territory to Costa Rica. Ever since then a festivity is held every year to commemorate the day they joined Costa Rica.
