Elections 2006
The Costa Rica presidential elections were held on Sunday 5 February, 2006.
The whole country indulged in an atmosphere of civic festivity and respect for the each other's electoral preferences.
The outcome resulted in a virtual tie between Liberation party candidate Oscar Arias Sanchez and Accion Ciudadana's candidate Otton Solis.
After a careful counting of the votes by the Elections Tribunal that took more than a month, Oscar Arias was proclaimed as the new president of Costa Rica by a small margin of less than 15,000 votes.
The Costa Rican people demostrated once more their strong democratic tradition by patiently waiting for the final results.
